Campaign Launch with Dennis Skinner

Our general and local elections campaigns were given a great boost this evening, with the beast of Bolsover Dennis Skinner helping to get things off to a strong start.

Dennis spoke to a packed gathering of supporters in Glossop Labour Club, stressing the need to win seats like the High Peak to ensure that a Labour government can repair the damage done by the last five years of the coalition government.

Taking place from 10.00am until 11.30am in the central Glossop location of the Glossop Market Arcade, the shopper’s surgery will feature Councillors Colin Waude and Godfrey Claff who represent Howard Town, Graham Oakley from Whitfield, Garry Parvin from Old Glossop, Bob Mckeown from Hadfield South, Anthony Mckeown from Gamesley and Glossop and Charlesworth County Councillor Damien Greenhalgh.

Taking place from 10.00am until 11.30am in the central Glossop location of the Glossop Market Arcade, the shopper’s surgery will feature Councillors Colin Waude and Godfrey Claff who represent Howard Town, Graham Oakley from Whitfield, Bob Mckeown from Hadfield South, Anthony Mckeown from Gamesley and Glossop and Charlesworth County Councillor Damien Greenhalgh.

Whilst the surgery has no set theme, and the councillor’s will be happy to answer any questions, comments and concerns that locals have, this month the councillors will have details on and are encouraging locals to respond to the current Derbyshire County Council consultation on local bus services.

Cllr Graham Oakley commented ”It is vital that local residents complete the consultation and say how they use these services and leave the county council in no doubt about the importance of these services to their everyday lives.”

Tip access road set for early improvement

According to Dave and Ellie Wilcox and Damien Greenhalgh (right), the new agreement with the landowner will see the access road to the site significantly improved.

The route to Melandra recycling centre is set to be repaired as the first stage in the planned redevelopment of the old Glossop tip.

According to local County Councillors, a report to the Derbyshire County Council cabinet on 5th August represented a welcome first stage in helping Glossopdale residents recycle their bulky waste more effectively.

County Councillor Damien Greenhalgh says the outstanding planning and environmental issues relating to the site are sorted and a start on the site itself in 2015 is a distinct possibility. Work on the repairs to the access road is programmed to begin in early September 2014.

He says that once completed, the new site will mean that people will no longer have to clamber up steps to recycle and dispose of many waste items.

“People taking waste to the Glossopdale recycling site have long complained about the state of the privately owned access road and it has certainly deteriorated yet further in the last few years,” says Dave Wilcox.

“But now, subject to a new agreement with the landowners, the road is to be resurfaced and repaired with the future cost of maintenance and repairs being shared with the County Council and the landowner.”

“Glossopdale residents will remember the sudden closure of the site four years ago, when waste had to be taken to County Council’s other recycling centre in the High Peak located in Buxton. The closure at that time was caused by problems with the bridge over the River Etherow,” said County Councillor Ellie Wilcox.

“This time around we are hopeful that people will have good notice of the planned redevelopment and that they will be able to get rid of big items in advance of any necessary temporary closure.”

“Efforts will be made to provide some limited recycling options in Glossopdale during the construction stage, but there are no immediately obvious alternative sites in the locality and any alternative will come at an additional cost.”

“Good advanced notice of proposed potential closure dates will allow residents to plan in anticipation of the site being unavailable for a period. It is unfortunate that the small footprint of the site means that keeping the site open during construction may not be possible,” said Dave Wilcox.

“We will however be asking for all options to be explored, whilst recognising that the County Council is having to deliver £157Million of cuts in the next two and a half years. As a consequence, additional spending on alternatives will necessarily be minimal.”
