The news we’ve all been waiting for!! Derbyshire Tories have been forced into a massive u-turn on the youth service!
The cabinet report will be published Thursday/Friday and will say:
- No mass closure of youth centres – examination on a case by case basis
- No immediate job losses
- £250,000 fund for voluntary sector
So youth centres will be examined on a case by case basis to determine future provision, so there may still be battles to fight, but they have caved in completely on Barry Lewis’s aim to close down all the DCC service in one fell swoop.
Even at this stage Barry Lewis hasn’t got the good grace to put his hands up and admit he was wrong.
He is saying that the petition and public outrage has been down to ‘Labour scaremongering’ and that he’s been misrepresented.
Sorry Barry, but that won’t wash. Everyone that attended any of the consultation meetings was left in no doubt about what he was trying to do.
Congratulations and thanks to everybody who has fought for this result – youth workers, trade unionists, Labour party members, the Derbyshire public and especially our brilliant and determined young people!
